Introducing our newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer - Karen Smallwood
In April this year, the board of Trustees made a historic move, by appointing the first female CEO in the 130-year history of Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.
After a rigorous recruitment process, with a competitive field of applicants, Karen Smallwood commenced her role on Tuesday 6 May, having held the role of Director of Financial & Commercial for the last ten years.
Karen’s previous experience includes Scottish & Newcastle PLC, Virgin Trains and Arena Leisure. Her commercial background, coupled with her experience in the arts and charity sector established her as the right person to take the organisation forward.
Karen said, “During my first months as CEO , I have been astounded by the amount of support I have received from the dedicated team here at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre and our external stakeholders. Safeguarding the future of one of the city’s most historic and treasured buildings is the absolute priority whilst devising our new five-year strategy.
Collaboration, Community, and Creativity will be at the heart of the strategy and everything we do moving forward. To achieve this, we have already consulted with the entire workforce to gain their insight into daily life at The Grand. This feedback will be instrumental when shaping the strategy and bring the team with us on our journey.
To be appointed the first female CEO of this wonderful theatre and charity is a position I will truly honour and perform to the upmost of my ability.”
